India’s power minister calls for thrust in hydro, solar energy to tide over coal shortage « Panchabuta – Cleantech & Renewable Energy in India

The mismatch is expected to widen the gap between the country’s demand and supply of energy, with coal imports meeting nearly a third of demand after five years.

Whereas coal will continue to be the mainstay of Indian power generation, costs of power production are rising for both domestic and imported coal. We welcome the Ministry of Power’s recognition of the importance of renewable energy, which has hitherto been considered the province of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
