Market-driven Distributed Solar to alleviate India’s Energy Poverty — Serra Power CEO at TiE Silicon Valley

TiE SIG Energy: Powering India’s Poor – Mobile Phones, Mini-Grids, and Community Power | TiE Silicon Valley

Speaking at the event, Sanjay Dani, Serra Power Solutions CEO, defined energy poverty (Video Clip 1) as the lack of 24/7 access to reliable electricity, which affects over 700 million people in India alone.

Serra CEO on a TiE Silicon Valley panel with Sierra Club's Carl Pope, SunEdison founder Jigar Shah, Khosla Impact investor Sandhya Hegde and LBL Scientist Amol Phadke

On the panel with a former chairman of Sierra Club, a Khosla Impact investor, a Lawrence Berkeley Lab scientist, and a SunEdison founder, Sanjay shared the story behind Serra Power’s mission (Video Clip 2) and his vision to empower India’s world-class entrepreneurs with distributed solar plants. He stressed that a solution provider should focus primarily on the customer’s business needs: increase the reliability of power supply and reduce overall energy costs.

He invited the Silicon Valley community to join in with solar technology innovations (Video Clip 3) that serve the unique needs of an emerging market like India and shared anecdotes of maneuvering bureaucratic challenges (see Video Clip 4 on dealing with the diesel mafia and Video Clip 5 for a policy recommendation to truly unlock distributed solar’s potential).
